about

Leonard Bernstein imagined that the neanderthal learned to first speak as a baby approaching mother's breast. The baby's mouth opens in anticipation of milk, lips opening in a "maaa" sound. The first word then may have been an ancient version of "Mother." Mother is "Ma" in Afrikaans, also "Madre," "Mate," and "Majka" in Spanish, Latvian, and Serbian respectively. Come to think of it, it's been a while since some we've had some breast milk.
